Q:
Will my parents or spouse be notified if I am ill?

A:
Because most students are at least eighteen when they arrive on campus, federal and state medical privacy and confidentiality laws apply to any care that they receive at University Health Services (UHS). When parents or other family members want information about non-emergency health care situations, we ask that they work through their student, asking them to grant UHS staff permission to discuss their care. UHS is often asked if the student can sign a “blanket” release of information form and the answer is no. In health care matters, such prospective (advance) releases are not legally defensible and such releases can be revoked by the student at any time.

However, UHS clinicians do talk to family members frequently (with the student’s consent) and they like to have their involvement in the student’s care when appropriate.

UHS clinicians work closely with students and their families when a student experiences a significant, but not life-threatening, illness or injury. They encourage students to allow them to contact their families in these cases. However, if the student declines, the clinician legally must respect the student’s decision.

If the student requests that the clinician contact their parent or other family member for any reason, UHS clinicians are always happy to do so.

In emergency/life-threatening situations, UHS clinicians do have the legal authority to contact a student’s family even if the student is unable to speak and give consent. They will exercise this right in those situations.
