 | Sports Medicine and Rehabilitative Services UHS offers rehabilitative services to address a wide range of musculoskeletal problems. Our multidisciplinary team includes athletic trainers, physical therapists, and sports medicine physicians. Physical therapists (PTs) are health care providers who are experts in the examination and treatment of problems that affect your ability to move and function. Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are health care experts who perform initial injury evaluations and provide guidance for self-care and return-to-exercise for musculoskeletal problems or injuries. Rehabilitative treatments vary based on each person’s medical needs, but may include therapeutic exercise, functional training, muscle and joint massage, electrotherapy, ultrasound, heat, and cold.
Athletic Trainers UHS Athletic Training drop-in clinic: Mondays through Thursdays during the fall and spring semesters, 4 pm to 7 pm—check in at the Information desk on the 5th floor (333 East Campus Mall); or call for an appointment. During the summer, ATCs are available by appointment only.
UHS ATCs work with students who have incurred minor injuries from their own workouts or from participating in recreational, intramural, or club sports. Students can drop in for a sports-related injury evaluation and, if needed, obtain a referral to see a UHS sports medicine physician. The service is primarily intended to help students deal with or answer questions about injuries such as sprains, muscle strains, tennis elbow, etc. No appointment is necessary during drop-in hours. Athletic trainers are also available at UHS on Wednesday afternoons by appointment.
UHS ATCs work in conjunction with the sports medicine physicians, who are available by referral from another UHS provider. Athletic Training services are fully covered by student health fees.
Physical Therapy Physical therapy (PT) can be helpful for a wide range of conditions, such as low back pain, joint and soft tissue injuries, and repetitive stress disorders, as well as following surgery. PTs develop a plan of care tailored to each patient’s goals. UHS has specialists in sports PT, spine and back PT, and women’s health. (UHS Physical Therapy does not offer wound care or hydrotherapy.)
Patients may be referred to UHS PT by their UHS health care provider or by an outside health care provider; or they may request an appointment without a referral. In the State of Wisconsin, a prescription or referral from a health care provider is not required to see a physical therapist.
PT services are not covered by student health fees. Current charges are: Initial visit: $60 Return visit: $40 These charges are fully covered by the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Non-SHIP students should check with their individual health insurance before receiving services to determine whether UHS PT services are covered.
