Preventive Care for Men

Screening tests can help identify health risks and find diseases early. Health experts recommend the following tests:

Obesity: Have your body mass index (BMI) calculated to screen for obesity. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

Cholesterol: Obtain a baseline screening at age 18 to 20. This is especially important if:

  • You have diabetes
  • you have high blood pressure
  • you smoke
  • heart disease runs in your family

Blood pressure: Have your blood pressure checked at least every two years. High blood pressure is 140/90 or greater.

Colorectal Cancer: Have a test for colorectal cancer starting at age 50. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, testing may be needed at an earlier age.

Diabetes: Get a test for diabetes if you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Depression: Emotional health is as important as physical well-being. If you have felt “down,” sad, or hopeless over the last two weeks or have felt little interest or pleasure in doing things, you may be depressed. See your health care provider or schedule an appointment at Counseling and Consultation Services to be screened for depression.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Talk to your health care provider to see whether you should be tested for Chlamydia or STIs.

HIV: Request HIV screening if you:
  • have had sex with men
  • have had unprotected sex with multiple partners
  • have used or now use injection drugs
  • exchange sex for money or drugs or have sex partners who do
  • have past or present sex partners who are HIV-infected or use injection drugs
  • are being treated for a sexually transmitted infection
