Health Insurance & SHIP

[SHIP Health Plan]

UHS services are available free to students currently enrolled at the UW-Madison with a valid student ID card. Students who were enrolled during the spring semester can still get care during the summer, even if they are not enrolled in summer session classes. Everyone — students and others — can be seen in the Blue Bus Clinic for sexually transmitted infections.

Fees paid during enrollment cover many basic medical services at UHS. Follow this link to look at a chart of available services: anything in the "free services" column is covered by your student fees.

Hospitalization, emergency room care, and care of complex health problems are not provided by UHS, and it is extremely important that you and your partner/family have adequate health insurance.

Many students have coverage under family plans, but the coverage is not always sufficient. Check with your parents to find out if you are still covered under their health insurance. If so, it's a good idea to keep information about that plan on hand at all times. If you don't have your own card, get a photocopy of the front and back of your parent's insurance card.

The SHIP Health Plan is a university-sponsored affordable health plan that provides comprehensive coverage for the services that UHS does not provide. International students and J-1 scholars are required to enroll in the SHIP Health Plan or to file a waiver proving they are adequately insured.
