Psychiatric Services
UHS psychiatric services include both psychiatrists and advanced practice psychiatric nurses and offers outpatient psychiatric care that focuses on medication management and evaluation. You may be referred to a UHS psychiatric services provider following an appointment in a medical clinic or a scheduled consultation at UHS Counseling and Consultation Services.
Our integrated clinical approach includes a review of previous treatment, a thorough diagnostic evaluation, and the proposal of a treatment plan. We may also make referrals to providers in the community for intensive or long-term treatment.

Transferring Care to UHS
If you have a prescription from home and you would like to transfer your care to a UHS psychiatry provider, please come to the reception desk of the UHS Counseling and Consultation Services (333 East Campus Mall, 7th floor) any time between 9 am and 4 pm, Monday through Friday for an Access consultation.
All students requesting that UHS write a prescription must first be seen in person by a psychiatric provider. We must receive and review your medical records from your previous provider before an appointment with a psychiatry provider can be made. You can you sign a Release of Information at Health Information Management (HIM) on the 8th floor after your Access Consultation. If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, your ADHD diagnostic evaluation/testing needs to be requested as well.
When your records arrive, you will receive a call from our administrative staff and they will schedule your appointment with a psychiatry provider.
Your first meeting with a psychiatry provider is a consultation. Prescriptions for controlled substance medications (for example; Ritalin, Adderall) may not be written at the first appointment. You will need to work with your previous prescriber during this initial process to ensure you have an adequate supply of medication (1-2 months).
In most cases, we can assume your prescription(s) and monitor your care while you are in school. In some cases, we may need to do further assessments before we can assume your care and write a prescription. In rare situations, your care may require a referral to a specialist in the Madison community.
Transferring Prescription Refills from Home
If you have a prescription from home for a psychiatric medication, you may transfer your refills to the UHS pharmacy or a pharmacy of your choice.
