Types of Physical Exams

Please note: At times of maximum patient volume during the semester, in order to optimize our availability to care for acute illnesses and injuries, we may sometimes have to suspend or delay scheduling of Primary Care Health Screenings and Third-Party-Requested Physical Exams.

Physical Examinations

Physical examinations fall into the following categories:

Primary Care Health Screening: Many students wonder if they need a periodic physical exam just to see if there’s something they should be doing for their health. At UHS, we call these types of visits Primary Care Health Screenings. This type of exam is covered by the Student Health Fee and has no charge. However, if you have no symptoms, complaints, or concerns, there is seldom a need for this type of exam.

Third-Party-Requested Physical Exam: This is a physical examination that a “third party,” usually a potential employer or study abroad program, requires you to complete. It typically has paperwork or an online form that the health care provider must fill out during the exam. This type of physical is not covered by the Student Health Fee and has an additional charge. These can be scheduled online through MyUHS or by phone. If lab tests or immunizations are required to complete this physical, there is also a charge for those.

Peace Corps Physical Exam: This is a specific type of third-party physical with an extensive physical exam. It is not covered by the Student Health Fee and has an additional charge. This can be scheduled online through MyUHS or by phone. If lab tests or immunizations are required to complete this physical, there is also a charge for those.

Travel Physical: This is a third-party-requested physical examination that is required for participation in program of study, travel, or employment abroad. The health care provider is required to complete accompanying paperwork about your health status. This service is not covered under the Student Health Fee, and there is a charge. If lab tests are required to complete this physical, there is also a charge for those. If immunizations are required to complete this physical, there is also a charge for those. Please note that this is different from a Travel Consultation

Women’s Physical Exams: The Women’s Health Clinic provides physical examinations for women with gynecological symptoms or concerns. These are included in the Student Health Fee and there is no charge. These appointments may be made through MyUHS.
