Design a flexible syllabus

Allowing for flexibility and mistakes can help keep all students motivated and alleviate stress, even if students fall behind in class or miss class due to health or personal issues. For example, allow a certain number of absences without an impact on participation grades or consider providing the opportunity to drop the lowest exam grade or make corrections for an improved grade.

Another strategy is to allow students to establish their own assignment due dates at the start of the semester based upon the requirements of their other courses, workplace responsibilities, family commitments, etc. This strategy empowers students with agency and autonomy over their own learning and academic success.

In addition, if one or more students have asked for an extension, you might consider offering an assignment extension to the entire class, particularly if it’s a stressful time in the semester. It’s likely that other students feel the same way but may not feel comfortable asking for an extension.
