UHS is here! Mental health is a widespread, all-encompassing issue, especially on college campuses, in a high-stress, competitive, sometimes foreign environment. We offer resources and services to address as many related concerns as possible in order to help keep you feeling happy, healthy and ready to embrace your college experience.
Just remember that you’re not alone in dealing with these issues, and you have the support of the Badger community behind you! Read up a bit on some mental health concerns that many college kids struggle with, and then check out some of the resources we offer to help manage them.
Number one on our list, because, well as a college student, it’s probably high up on your list, too. The buildup of homework, exams, social pressures, student orgs, jobs, and everything else that comes with being a student packs on a lot of pressure and can lead to anxiety. It’s important to keep in mind that depression isn’t just “sadness” – it’s a legitimate physical condition resulting from chemical imbalances in the brain. Sometimes excessive stress can lead to depression. Other environmental factors, including the big changes and new challenges that college brings can definitely play a role, too. Symptoms include prolonged feelings of intense sadness, isolation or anxiety. And it doesn’t just affect your mood—depression can interfere with all aspects of your life, from academic to social. …or should we say lack thereof, can lead to major mental health problems. Depriving your brain of the rest that it needs to function may be caused by the issues mentioned above. And difficulty sleeping can be a health issue in itself, like insomnia, possibly linked to factors like stress or depression.
