With the recent outbreak of Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, and South Sudan, University Health Services (UHS) is sharing an update on travel alerts.
At this time, the risk of an Ebola outbreak in the United States is low. To prevent the introduction of Ebola to the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued a Level 3 Travel Warning advising against nonessential travel to the DRC. The CDC is also closely monitoring and evolving outbreak in Uganda and has implemented enhanced public health measures for individuals returning from the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan, including entry restrictions.
The CDC asks those returning from the DRC to be aware of any change in their health and monitor symptoms for 21 days after leaving the area. Symptoms include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Joint and muscle aches
- Weakness
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain
- Lack of appetite
If you recently traveled to the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan and develop any of the above symptoms, contact your health care provider immediately. UW–Madison faculty and staff should contact their health care provider. Students can contact either UHS or their health care provider. Tell your health care provider about your recent travel and potential exposure before going to the doctor’s office or emergency room to prevent potential transmission to others.
