Specifications Grading

Grades and grading often create stress for both students and instructors. While current practices such as grading on a curve and grade inflation are popular, there is little standardization and these practices may exacerbate the complexities of the practice without a clear understanding of how grading shapes student success (Hall, 2018).

Linda Nilson created an alternative grading process (specification grading) that relies on pass/fail grading, creating course content into modules that link to learning outcomes, and bundling assignments and assessments within modules. Students decided what grade they want and complete the bundle within a specific module.
