Reinforce healthy social norms

Set the expectation that students should review course material ahead of time, avoid procrastination, and reinforce the need to get plenty of sleep before exams or major due dates. You can communicate these expectations by setting assignment deadlines at reasonable hours (e.g.,  11 pm rather than 8 am) that encourage students to submit assignments before going to sleep.

Our communications with students related to alcohol must challenge the perception that high-risk drinking is an accepted part of the college experience. Reinforce that the individual choices students make about alcohol use have a profound impact on their academic success, their own college experience, and the campus climate.

Avoid discussing alcohol use outside the classroom and familiarize yourself with these messaging strategies. Refrain from making assumptions about students’ alcohol use (e.g., “It’s Friday so you all will be going out and getting drunk”), don’t host class events that involve alcohol, and avoid discussing personal alcohol use to connect with students (e.g., “When I was in college…”). Consider scheduling classes and assignment due dates to occur on Mondays and Fridays.
