Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment

This service is an assessment that provides an opportunity to meet one-on-one with an alcohol and drug specialist, who will evaluate the nature of any problems a student is having with alcohol or drugs. During an assessment, a student is involved in discussing biological, psychological, and social factors affecting alcohol and other drug use and abuse. If necessary and appropriate, the counselor can make recommendations for further treatment.

Personalized treatment plans

Counselors work collaboratively with students to identify their readiness to make changes in their alcohol and drug use. A personalized treatment plan may include individual or group counseling, or a combination of both. A counselor may also discuss referring a student to additional resources, both on and off campus. In addition, counselors will help students identify healthier coping strategies to replace the use of alcohol and drugs. Students and counselors work toward the goal of lowering health risks by disengaging from harmful behaviors. Group treatment can help students know that they are not alone in their struggles with alcohol and drug abuse and can be a safe place to receive support and feedback.

Alcohol and other drug assessments for judicial purposes

UHS does not conduct Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) assessments or provide AOD counseling for the judicial system (pretrial hearings, OWI, etc.). The following community providers perform AOD assessments for judicial purposes:
