Biography
Mariessa joined UHS in 2022.
Mariessa works with students in individual therapy, group therapy, and surgery readiness assessment. They also partner with the GSCC to offer drop-in support with Let’s Talk, outreach initiatives, and other consultation to students and staff.
Approach
Mariessa believes in therapy as a collaborative practice that is grounded in curiosity, non-judgment, and non-carceral care. They are committed to bringing their knowledge, compassion, and kind attention to students’ lived experiences, trusting in their students’ expertise in their own lives and circumstances. Mariessa works with students to expand their insight and understanding of their relationships, values, motivations, behavior patterns, unconscious mind, and social location as it relates to their goals or problems.
Their approach can be described as warm, direct, and a bit humorous. They also believe that a genuine sense of play can help address challenging topics in approachable ways. Values and approaches at the core of their practice also include abolition, bodily sovereignty, sexual liberation, Health at Every Size, intersectional feminism, multiculturalism, environmental justice, and decolonization.
Mariessa does not use any generative artificial intelligence or language learning models (AI/LLMs) in their clinical practice.

Professional Interests/Specializations
Mariessa holds significant experience and training in providing gender and sexual health services to college populations and across the lifespan. They also have experience and interests working with experiences of grief and loss, chronic pain, non-monogamous relational orientations, alternative lifestyles, and the performing arts.
Personal Interests
Outside of work, Mariessa enjoys playing softball and other recreational sports around the city, watching anime, learning to sew and mend clothing, cheering for women’s hockey, and working on other artistic projects.
Before moving to the Midwest, Mariessa has lived in Northern California, Western Oregon, Western Idaho, and Queens, NYC. Of all these previous homes, they love Teejóp for it’s vibrant music scene, farmer’s markets, public transit, and access to nature.
