Call for Help

UHS psychiatric services offers outpatient psychiatric care focused on medication management and evaluation. Our integrated clinical approach includes a review of previous treatment, a thorough diagnostic evaluation, and the proposal of a treatment plan.

Students may be referred to UHS psychiatric services following a medical appointment or an Access Appointment. We may also make referrals to providers in the Madison area for intensive or long-term treatment.

If you think that your provider is not a good match for you, we encourage you to discuss your concerns directly with your provider. Our providers understand that not all client/patient/provider assignments are a good fit and will help facilitate a referral to another provider, as appropriate. If you have further concerns, contact the Director of Psychiatry Services.

Transferring care to UHS

The first step to all Mental Health Services is to schedule an Access Appointment.

Call 608-265-5600 (option 2) or log into MyUHS to schedule a time to speak with an Access Specialist who will listen and discuss the most appropriate resources. During that appointment, the counselor will work with you to connect you to a UHS psychiatric provider.

The initial meeting with a psychiatry provider is a consultation. Prescriptions for controlled substance medications (for example; Ritalin, Adderall) may not be written at the first appointment. Students need to work with their previous prescriber during this initial process to ensure an adequate supply of medication (one to two months).

Transferring prescription refills from home

Prescriptions from home or outside providers can be transferred to UHS. Follow these steps:

  1. Complete a release of information form and submit it to Health Information Management
  2. Request that a home/outsider provider send your health records to UHS
  3. UHS reviews health records
  4.  Student schedules an appointment. Psychiatry appointments related to medication management cannot be scheduled until UHS has received and reviewed a student’s health records.

Late cancellations and no-show fees

If you need to miss a psychiatry appointment, call 608.265.5600 (option 2) to cancel by 5 p.m. the day before the appointment. Cancelling psychiatry appointments after that time will result in a late cancellation fee of $10. If you don’t cancel prior to your appointment time, or arrive to your appointment more than 10 minutes late, you will be charged a no-show fee of $20.

We understand that—on rare occasions—there may be extenuating circumstances that prevent you from calling. If we made an error in scheduling you or you believe you deserve special consideration for a no-show/late cancel fee, please download and complete this No-Show/Late Cancel Appeal Form and deliver or mail it to UHS within two weeks of the missed appointment.
